Developing An Older Adult Volunteer Program - 1110 Words

To be honest, this week’s readings indeed opened a door for me to realize my limited background information about the aging field and to grasp pieces of its real appearance. Four required articles focus on different aspects, among which the one named â€Å"developing an older adult volunteer program in a New York Chinese Community: An Evidence-based Approach† attracted me most. Reasons are as follows. First, this study targets at Chinese American immigrants in New York City who I have worked with in the last year’s field education. Thus, for me, compared to other older people groups, I am more familiar with this population’s characteristics and conditions, which became part of the motivation for keep exploring. Second, even if I worked in two different kinds of institutions for older people—senior center and day care center, I did not get in touch with any volunteer programs while volunteerism serves as a vital as well as effective way for productive aging promotion. Another reason is that when I read the abstract, it stated that this volunteer project successfully benefited both involved parties—older volunteers and caring recipients. I was considering that the volunteer program model described in this article might be applied to China and create new methods and perspective for older people to reach the goal of productive aging.
